Since 2019, artist Lisa Truttmann has been exploring the material echoes and consequences of a fire that destroyed her apartment and studio. First the flames, then the extinguishing water, devastated and deformed a large part of her personal belongings, artistic works, and materials. In response to this radical event, Truttmann turned her focus to the relationship between humans and objects, developing the ongoing series Memorabilien across different forms and media.

In her installation Aufstellung der Dinge (Constellation of Things), Truttmann presents a selection of objects she was able to salvage—among them a severely charred book, now warped into a sculpture, melted video ­cassettes, a scorched childhood diary, and other ­everyday things. Displayed in glass vitrines, they are rendered untouchable, reinforcing their transition from things to objects through recontextualisation. On an acoustic level, Truttmann contrasts these eleven rescued objects with an abstract mass of irretrievably lost things. A five-channel audio composition features a spoken inventory of every item in the apartment at the time of the fire. Through the increasing speed of the voice and the layering of audio tracks, the composition evokes a sense of presence through absence.
