The title of the piece is a literal description of its content: the camera meanders from rooftop to rooftop, with architecture dissolving into abstract forms and structures. Animated and composed into a single continuous shot, the path takes us through the sky, scraping and tilting along Shanghai’s iconic high-rise buildings. Rooftops was presented in a collaborative exhibition titled Related Movements.

Exhibition text
In their projections, Frank Hagen, Renate Mihatsch, and Lisa Truttmann edit and animate cinematic excerpts of urban spaces and coastal regions. They project these images outward, through the windows onto Vienna’s Taborstraße, where they interact—not only with each other, but also with the reflections of the city’s nighttime activity. This way, both the physical world and the underlying structures of Istanbul’s harbor, the islands of Victoria, the coast of Le Havre, and the heights of Shanghai are simultaneously brought into question on a single plane of projection.
