Revisiting Gerda Lampalzer’s
Translation (2003), media installation
During the first months of the Covid-19 lockdown, Art in Public Space Lower Austria invited artists, theorists, curators, architects, writers and musicians to browse the online archive and select one of approximately 300 existing works of the public collection. They were asked to reflect upon it in their own ways and media, sharing thoughts and artistic reactions, carrying on initial approaches or developing something completely new. I chose the work Translation (2003) by Gerda Lampalzer, a multi-screen video installation dealing with language from a social and linguistic point of view just as much as from a formal and media theoretical perspective. The resulting video Grundmaterial (Raw Material) is a self-reflecting conversation with Gerda Lampalzer, slightly humorous, chopped up and rearranged.
